A few photos from my three days in Singapore on the way from Sydney to London in September 2008. Some photos of the city, as well as a few of the Commonwealth War Graves-run Kranji War Memorial.

Richard Flynn > Rows of Australian graves in the Kranji War Memorial, on the north side of Singapore. These soldiers served protecting the Malay peninsula during the second world war. The memorial is looked after by the Commonwealth War Graves commission.

Richard Flynn > The Kranji War Memorial is on the north side of the island of Singapore, closer to Johor Bahru (JB) in Malaysia than to the ‘Downtown Core’ area of Singapore. But that’s not saying much: the island is only about eight miles north–south. Here the high-rise buildings of downtown Singapore are seen from the wet hill of the Commonwealth war graveyard.

Richard Flynn > The towers downtown Singapore next to the harbour/bay. There is a stricct height restriction on buildings in Singapore so as not to interfere with flight operations at the island’s two airports, principally the major international airport, Changi.

Richard Flynn > One of Singapore’s national symbols, the Merlion. This statue is the principal and original representation, but there are a few others dotted around the island.

Richard Flynn > On-board the Singapore Flyer, currently the world’s largest ferris wheel which opened on 1st March 2008, six months before I went on it. On 23rd December the wheel suffered electrical problems forcing it to be shut down. As I write this it is still closed to the public while it is being tested .
