Chicago, December 2009 : The Windy City. The City that Works. The validity of each of Chicago’s epithets became evident to me as I visited a place that, in spite of the chilly wind coming from the lake bringing ambient temperatures to about 6ºF, continued to function completely normally. In my four-day visit I squeezed in a great variety—art, science, the ancient orient, Frank Lloyd Wright—all in a very visually appealing city. I was very sorry to leave.

Graceland, 30th November 2009 : I didn’t know what to expect from my visit to Graceland (in Memphis, Tennessee). The whole experience is very tightly controlled, both in physical terms (the upstairs of the house, for example hasn’t been touched since the day Elvis died, and is certainly off-limits to tourists), and in the image that is presented of the King (there are absolutely no photos of the later ‘Fat Elvis’ period, and very little information in general about the latter years of his life). But, for all that, the visit was highly informative and the inside of the house, in particular, was fascinating to look at.

New Orleans, November 2009 : Photos mainly from the French Quarter in New Orleans, which when I went had been very well reconstructed after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina because it is the principal tourist attraction. Much of the city, especially the poorer outer neighbourhoods which most tourists would never see, is still in a state of disrepair.

Nassau, The Bahamas, 21st November 2009 : I was in the Bahamas for the weekend 20th–22nd November, and was only taking photos on Saturday 21st. Nassau is a very small town, and contrary to the image which the Bahamas presents of itself to the world’s tourists, its people are often quite poor. Only one rather small area of the city is particularly tourist-friendly, and it’s not too difficult to get to the ‘wrong side of the tracks’ and the rather more seedy and dangerous neighbourhoods. In fact, as I was exploring up on the hill away from the waterfront, a man came up to me to warn me not to go any further since I would be in danger!

Washington, DC; and Baltimore, October 2009 : They may only be forty miles apart, but Washington and Baltimore are superficially very different cities. However, Baltimore has seen many efforts at restoration and regeneration over the last few years, and away from the grand memorials and slightly dull city, Washington is a place with problems, partly to do with the fact that it is sui generis and has no local government formally to represent its inhabitants. This is the place where the revolutionaries’ complaint about British ‘taxation without representation’ is easily recycled in the current day.

Albany, October 2009 : In theory Albany was only going to be a stepping-stone as I passed from Montreal to Boston. However, some sunshine and a massive variation of architectural style used in the various government buildings—including an enormous amount of marble—meant that I was able to spend a very pleasant morning there taking photographs.
