Perth and the Indian Pacific Trans-Australian Railway

My parents and I flew from Sydney to Perth for three days in August 2005 before catching the Indian Pacific railway train back across Australia. The journey lasted three nights, and we passed through the Nullarbor Plain and also travelled on the longest straight stretch of railway in the world.

Sydney from the air • As we climbed out of Sydney, the sky was very clear, and we were afforded a bird's eye view over some of the city.

Our train stands at Cook • We stopped at the remote South-Australian town of Cook—population often quoted as 3, although it was shown to be larger than that—on our trip on the Indian Pacific Railway. The engine drivers stop to rest at Cook: the drivers for the Indian Pacific also drive the cross-country freight trains, so after spending a night at Cook they swap with the latest arrival.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service • When travelling on the Indian Pacific railway, we stopped at Broken Hill in western New South Wales and were taken on a bus tour which included the RFDS base.
