Albany, October 2009

In theory Albany was only going to be a stepping-stone as I passed from Montreal to Boston. However, some sunshine and a massive variation of architectural style used in the various government buildings—including an enormous amount of marble—meant that I was able to spend a very pleasant morning there taking photographs.

The New York Capitol. When I first saw it I wondered if the architect had just come back from a holiday among the Austrian Schlösser when he set about designing a building for the government of the Empire State.

The Alfred E. Smith building rising into the sky. In the same art deco style, this building was in fact completed in 1928, the year before construction began on the Empire State Building in Manhattan.
